How long does a furnace last?
A well-maintained furnace can last at least 16 to 20 years. Please note several factors can impact the life of your furnace—its make and model, usage rate, and whether or not your furnace has been maintained. Hillside’s HVAC professionals can extend the life of your furnace with our annual tune-ups and diligence on repairs.
How does your oil furnace work?
An oil furnace is a device that burns oil to heat air.
(A) The thermostat sends a signal to the controls on the burner.
(B) The fuel pump draws oil through a filter to the burner.
(C) The burner turns the oil into a fine spray, mixes it with air, and ignites it in the combustion chamber, causing the chamber to become very hot.
(D) Air absorbs heat in the heat exchanger.
(E) A blower sends this air through ducts to heat the home.
(F) The air eventually circulates to the heat exchanger, and the cycle continues. (G) Combustion emissions are vented out of the flue.
H) Hillside Oil Heating & Cooling is a full-service heating oil company. We deliver fuel to your home and can install, maintain, and repair oil (and natural gas, propane gas, and electric) heating systems in DE, MD, & PA.
When is it time to replace a furnace?
Concerned you may need a new furnace? How to know when it is time.
We get asked in emails, on the phone, and in-home repair service calls, “Is it time to replace my furnace?” Customers fear the financial costs associated with replacing a furnace. We understand their concern, but there comes a time when the pain of repair costs and skyrocketing heating bills is greater than purchasing a brand-new energy-efficient furnace. So when is the best time to repair it, and when is the best time to replace it?
Pay attention to these oil or natural gas furnaces in warning signs before you experience a no-heat emergency on a cold night. This is the worst time to call a DE, PA, and MD heating tech to assess your failing or faulty heating system. It’s better to be prepared. Here are some “warning signs” to consider replacing your aging and faulty furnace.
- Frequent service calls
- High repair bills
- Uneven temperatures
- Inability to stay at the thermostat’s temperature setting
- Furnace blowing cold air
- New or increased noises
- Increase in energy bills

Don’t wait until your furnace fails before considering replacing it. If your furnace or boiler is old, worn out, inefficient, or significantly oversized, replacing it with a modern, high-efficiency model is the simplest solution. Old coal burners switched over to oil, or gas are prime candidates for replacement, and gas furnaces with pilot lights rather than electronic ignitions. Newer systems may be more efficient but are still likely oversized and can often be modified to lower their operating capacity.
