Common Problems with Air Conditioning Systems
Here are some common problems with residential A/C systems. You might be able to resolve some of these issues yourself, but if your air conditioner is leaking refrigerant or you can’t get it to work, please call us and schedule an A/C repair service.
- My air conditioner won’t turn on. Start by checking your thermostat to ensure it’s on, the batteries are working, and it’s set correctly. If the problem persists, check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. Breakers and fuses protect your A/C unit’s motor or compressor from overheating. If the compressor is dead, the breaker is often one of the first things an HVAC technician will check.
- The air isn’t cold. Again, check your thermostat settings. If your compressor isn’t working, your A/C unit won’t cool your home. Insufficient refrigerant can cause the compressor to overheat and eventually seize, while too much refrigerant can return to the compressor and cause it to fail.
- We have uneven cooling. Inconsistent temperatures are often due to leaky ducts, inadequate insulation, or blocked registers. Upgrading to a zoning system can help manage temperatures in specific areas, or you might consider a ductless heating and cooling system.
- My air conditioner is making strange noises. Ignoring unusual noises from your A/C unit can turn minor issues into major expenses. Modern cooling systems are quieter than ever, thanks to sound-dampening technology. Strange noises can indicate the following:
- Banging usually signals a loose or broken part.
- Clanking can indicate a loose or out-of-balance component.
- Constant clicking could mean a defective control or failing thermostat.
- Buzzing noises from the outside unit could suggest a loose or failing fan motor.
- Squeaks and squeals might indicate that the fan motor or indoor blower motors are going bad.
The sooner you identify and address the cause of these noises, the better.
AC Repair FAQs
Here are some common problems with residential A/C systems. You might be able to resolve some of these issues yourself, but if your air conditioner is leaking refrigerant or you can’t get it to work, please call us and schedule an A/C repair service.
- Why do I have frozen evaporator coils? Your air conditioner’s evaporator coil is filled with refrigerant and absorbs heat like a sponge. However, these coils need warm air around them to work properly. If airflow is restricted and the evaporator coil gets too cold, ice can build up on the outside, leading to warm or no air coming from your air conditioning supply registers. To avoid frozen coils, change your filter every month and schedule a tune-up to test your system’s airflow and refrigerant levels, addressing any issues we discover.
- My air conditioner is making strange noises.
Refrigerant is a liquid that absorbs heat from the air. Without enough refrigerant, your A/C can’t cool the air effectively. A low refrigerant level means there’s a leak. Signs of a refrigerant leak include:
- Ice buildup on the refrigerant line and outside unit
- Bubbling or hissing noises
- Difficulty cooling the home on hot days, even though it cools fine on cooler days or at night.
- If you notice these signs, turn off your A/C and call an HVAC professional immediately. Running the A/C with a refrigerant leak can cause severe damage to the compressor.
- What if my A/C compressor stopped working? The compressor is a crucial component of your A/C system, pumping refrigerant through the cooling coils and lines. If it’s damaged, the A/C can’t cool your air. Compressor issues often require replacement, which is one of the most expensive repairs. We’ll help you decide whether to repair or replace your entire outdoor unit and check if your unit is still under warranty.
