Avoid Buyer’s Remorse
We make small and large decisions all of the time. Have you ever hired a contractor to work on your home project that turned out to be a nightmare? Perhaps you found them on Craiglist and hired them over a reputable company because they were really cheap. Our decisions don’t always lead to expected outcomes and we wish we made a different choice. This is known as Buyer’s remorse—a feeling of regret after a purchasing decision.
Here’s a little science if you like that kind of thing. Buyer’s remorse is thought to stem from cognitive dissonance, specifically post-decision dissonance, that arises when a person must make a difficult decision, such as a heavily invested purchase between two similarly appealing alternatives.
If you made any big mistakes in the past, we thought we’d make you feel better by sharing other people poor choices.
Investing in a Betamax Home Theatre
Sony launched its Betamax video cassette recorder in 1975. Rival JVC launched its own version with the VHS a year later. Both machines allowed consumers to store information compactly on a tape. In the beginning, there was no clear format winner although it seemed Sony had the upper hand due to its superior recording, playback, and sound quality.
Why did VHS win? There were a few minor reasons. VHS was lighter than the Betamax. VHS machines were cheaper. Betamax tapes played for only one hour. VHS played for 2 hours (enough time to record and watch a whole movie). This allowed the video rental industry to adopt VHS faster and with more titles. This, more than anything else, gave VHS the edge in the format war.
So, if you chose to build your home theatre with Betamax you would be left with very little movies to watch. You would have to wait again until the Blu-Ray vs. HDVD wars to choose the right format. Did you buy an HDVD player?

Investing With Bernie Madoff
Remember former Chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange and investment darling, Bernie Madoff? In 2008, he was charged and pleaded guilty to defrauding investors in the amount of over $50 billion. The disgraced financier was later sentenced to 150 years in prison for running the largest Ponzi or pyramid scheme in history.
Some of Madoff’s more famous investors who wish they could forget Bernie:
- Steven Spielberg
- Kevin Bacon
- Kyra Sedgwick
- John Malkovich
- Larry King
- New York Mets ownership
The real victims of the scandal were devastated retirement and pension funds, charitable organizations and thousands of individual investors.
