Reasons to Get An Air Conditioner and Furnace Replacement at the Same Time

Installing a new furnace and air conditioning system simultaneously offers several advantages to a more comfortable home. Here are some of the benefits:

Enhancing HVAC Energy Efficiency

Today’s heating and air conditioning systems boast remarkable efficiency, consuming significantly less energy than their predecessors from a decade or two ago. Thanks to the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating, evaluating the efficiency of various air conditioning systems is now easier. A higher SEER translates to lower energy consumption and reduced operating costs.

As of January 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) mandates a minimum SEER requirement of 14 for AC units in northern states. Investing in a unit with one of these elevated SEER ratings ensures prolonged performance without premature replacements.

Furnaces are evaluated based on annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), a seasonal performance metric. Generally, a new, efficient furnace is recommended to have an AFUE of 90% or higher. Boilers and heat pump systems may have slightly different optimal ratings.

Optimizing Furnace and AC Performance

Pairing a new system with an outdated, inefficient counterpart can shorten the lifespan of the newly installed system. This mismatch reduces the performance of both appliances, failing to leverage technological advancements fully.

Understanding warranty terms is crucial. Manufacturers may not honor warranties for new systems combined with older ones if breakdowns occur during the warranty period. Simultaneously replacing both systems ensures warranty coverage when needed.

Synergistic HVAC Systems

A furnace and central air conditioning system share the same air handler or blower. Opting for a matched system ensures that both components work harmoniously, providing the level of home comfort you deserve. This synergy not only enhances efficiency but also translates to long-term cost savings.

Long-term Cost Savings

Investing in a matched system yields cost savings over time, as all components work together seamlessly for maximum efficiency. With both systems under warranty, overall repair needs are minimized. Additionally, opting for simultaneous replacement simplifies installation and can reduce total costs compared to staggered replacements.

Reasons to Delay AC and Furnace Replacement

Despite the numerous benefits of simultaneous furnace and AC replacement, this approach may not be suitable for every homeowner. Here are some reasons why delaying a total HVAC system replacement might be preferable, even if one component is not malfunctioning:

Your System Is Relatively New and Functioning Well

If your furnace and air conditioner are only a few years old and operate without any issues, there may be no immediate need to replace them. However, if either appliance is experiencing significant performance issues and repair costs exceed half the price of purchasing a new unit, it may be more cost-effective to opt for replacement, particularly if the unit is over six years old.

Budget Constraints

If replacing the furnace and air conditioner simultaneously strains your budget, you must not put yourself in a financially precarious situation. Prioritize addressing the most pressing needs while considering more affordable options or exploring financing solutions for future replacements.

Furnaces (Natural Gas, Oil) Tax Credits

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 empowers Americans to make homes and buildings more energy-efficient by providing federal tax credits and deductions to help reduce energy costs and demand as we transition to cleaner energy sources.

Through 2032, federal income tax credits are available to homeowners. These credits allow up to $3,200 annually to lower the cost of energy-efficient home upgrades by up to 30 percent.

In addition to the energy efficiency credits, homeowners can also take advantage of the modified and extended Residential Clean Energy credit, which provides a 30 percent income tax credit for clean energy equipment, such as rooftop solar, wind energy, geothermal heat pumps, and battery storage through 2032.

ENERGY STAR provides the following information to help you learn:

SAVE $2000

Upgrade your heating and cooling systems:  Replace your heating and cooling system for maximum efficiency. Purchase an air-source heat pump that qualifies for the energy-efficient home improvement credit. In the same tax year, you can claim 30% of the cost of that project, for up to an additional $2,000.

SAVE $1200

A home energy audit can help you identify the most significant and cost-effective energy efficiency improvements your home can benefit from. Additionally, if you are considering upgrading your heating and cooling system, it is wise to optimize your attic insulation first, to reduce the air leaks that contribute to energy waste and make your home less comfortable. Individually, you could claim 30% of the cost of the home energy audit up to $150 and you could claim 30% of the product cost of the insulation, up to $1,200.

SAVE $3200

Combined (for which you can claim $1,200), your total claim amount would now be $3,200, which is the maximum allowed in one taxable year.

What products are eligible?

Gas Furnaces

ENERGY STAR-certified gas furnaces with AFUE > 97% are eligible.

Note: Under the tax code, eligible equipment must “meet or exceed the highest efficiency tier (not including any advanced tier) established by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, which is in effect as of the beginning of the calendar year.” The eligibility described above is consistent with this requirement.

Oil Furnaces

ENERGY STAR-certified oil furnaces that use certain fuels are eligible. The manufacturer must rate the equipment with fuel blends consisting of biodiesel, renewable diesel, or second-generation biofuel at least 20 percent of the volume.

Heat Pump Technology

These energy-efficient home improvement credits are available for 30% of costs – up to $2,000 – and can be combined with credits up to $1,200 for other qualified upgrades made in one tax year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Small warning signs carry more weight if your furnace is over 15 years old — including more frequent or longer runs to reach your desired temperature. Most furnaces don’t fail suddenly without warning, so it’s possible to predict their failure if you’re paying attention.

Identifying when to replace your furnace is crucial for sidestepping the hassles and costs of an emergency replacement. Unsure if your furnace is nearing the end? Here are the top indicators signaling it might be time for a new one:

  1. Age of System: Tracking its age can help catch potential failures sooner rather than later. Furnaces over 15 years old, especially those exhibiting subtle signs like increased runtime, could be on the brink of failure.
  2. Increased Maintenance Needs: A series of furnace repairs can potentially indicate deeper issues. Common repairs include malfunctioning blower motors, cracked heat exchangers, faulty ignition systems, and thermostats.
  3. Increased Energy Bills: An unexplained uptick in your energy bill could be traced back to an inefficient furnace. Older units tend to lose efficiency over time, causing them to work harder to maintain desired temperatures.
  4. Uneven Heating: Inconsistent heating throughout your home could indicate a failing furnace. If you constantly adjust thermostats to achieve consistent comfort, your furnace could be nearing the end of its lifespan.
  5. Strange Noises: Unusual sounds emanating from your furnace often indicate underlying issues. If your furnace makes unusual sounds, it’s wise to have it inspected by a professional to determine if replacement is necessary.

By recognizing these signs early on, you can proactively address furnace issues before they escalate, ensuring comfort and safety in your home.

Determining when your AC system requires replacement isn’t always straightforward. Often, you’ll need a professional assessment to gauge the issue’s nature, severity, and the appropriate solution. Nonetheless, there are seven key indicators to watch for that may signal the end of your system’s effective lifespan:

  1. Age of System: Knowing that your AC system is nearing or exceeding its average lifespan (around 15 years) suggests considering preemptive replacement to avoid unexpected breakdowns.
  2. Increased Energy Bills: If you observe a significant rise in energy expenses over time, your aging system’s declining efficiency might be to blame.
  3. Warm Air from AC: When your indoor unit starts blowing warm instead of cool air, it could signal low refrigerant levels or issues with essential components like evaporator coils, heat pumps, or condenser fan motors.
  4. Unusual Noises: Grinding or whirring sounds from your AC system could indicate worn belts, loose parts, or malfunctioning motors, potentially necessitating a replacement.
  5. Reduced Airflow: A lack of airflow from your vents may result from problems with the blower motor. While simple fixes like replacing air filters might help, more severe issues could require a full system replacement.
  6. Leaks: Indoor unit leaks, whether water or refrigerant, could signify various issues, including clogged condensate lines or aging equipment, warranting professional evaluation.
  7. Increased Maintenance Needs: Frequent repairs indicate your AC may be approaching the end of its operational life, prompting consideration for a new system that requires less upkeep.

By recognizing these signs and acting accordingly, you can ensure your home remains comfortably cool and energy-efficient.

If you can hold off on replacing your unit for a while, you may benefit from reduced prices, depending on the season. Typically, air conditioning units see price drops in the fall when demand decreases as temperatures cool down. Similarly, furnaces become more affordable in the spring as the weather worsens.
