When the bitter cold sets in, and snow and wind start howling, it’s tempting to grab a space heater to warm those drafty rooms. While space heaters can be a quick fix for chilly spaces, they’re also a leading cause of home heating fires. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that half of all home heating fires occur between December and February, with space heaters responsible for one-third of those fires. That’s why it’s crucial to use them safely.
Space Heater Safety Tips
Space heaters can be a safe addition to your home heating system if you follow these precautions:
- Read the Instructions
Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for setup and operation. Using a space heater incorrectly can turn it from a helpful tool into a serious hazard. - Keep Combustible Items Away
Maintain at least a 3-foot clearance around the heater. Keep it away from drapery, bedding, furniture, and clothing that could ignite. - Inspect Power Cords
Use only cords that are in good condition—no fraying or damage. Ensure the cord is adequate to carry the heater’s electrical load. Avoid extension cords unless they’re heavy-duty and rated for the device.
Fireplace Safety: Warmth Without the Risk
A wood-burning fireplace can add extra heat and ambiance, but it must be maintained properly to stay safe:
- Clean Your Chimney Annually
Creosote buildup in the chimney is a major fire hazard. Hire a professional chimney sweep at least once a year to remove this dangerous residue. - Use a Safety Screen
Always place a glass or metal mesh screen in front of the fireplace opening to stop sparks and cinders from escaping into your home. - Burn the Right Fuel
Stick to seasoned firewood and avoid burning trash, green wood, or treated materials that produce dangerous chemicals or excess creosote.
Safety Checklist
Here are a few more tips to keep your home safe and cozy this winter:
- Keep combustible items at least 3 feet away from space heaters and fireplaces.
- Never refill fuel-burning heaters like kerosene models while they’re hot—always refuel outdoors using the recommended fuel.
- Don’t use your kitchen range to heat your home—it’s a fire hazard.
- Ensure every level of your home has a working smoke detector, and replace the batteries every six months.
- Install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, especially if you use backup power generators or fuel-burning appliances.
