“The HVAC Tune-Up Trap”
An HVAC Investigator’s Special Report

It sounds like a deal too good to be true—an HVAC tune-up for a bargain price, just when your heating or cooling system needs it most. But could this be the first step in a well-orchestrated trap? For many homeowners, it is.
Across the tri-state area, thousands of families unknowingly fall victim to what some insiders call the “tune-up trap.” It starts with an enticing offer—a cheap inspection that seems like a no-brainer. But for some HVAC companies, that low-cost tune-up is just the beginning of a sophisticated sales mechanism designed to extract more money from unsuspecting customers.
Many companies place enormous pressure on their technicians to upsell during these routine visits. And if they don’t? They could face consequences—missed bonuses, reprimands, or even threats to their job security. Behind closed doors, quotas reign supreme. The technicians are sent in not just to inspect, but to sell.
“If you don’t upsell at least 50% of the time, you’re out,” said one technician who wished to remain anonymous. “They call it ‘performance,’ but really, it’s just about hitting sales numbers.”
Companies often use a simple bait: a cheap tune-up. Once inside your home, the tune-up may reveal “issues” with your system—sometimes real, sometimes exaggerated. Before you know it, you’re handed a bill for hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars in “urgent repairs.”
It all starts with an ad: a $49 HVAC tune-up. It promises a thorough inspection of your system at a price that seems too good to pass up. But once the technician enters your home, the real motive begins to reveal itself.
These low-cost tune-ups are often nothing more than bait used by unethical companies. Once inside, the technician “discovers” numerous issues—many of which are either exaggerated or fabricated—and recommends costly repairs or replacements. This high-pressure sales tactic leaves homeowners confused and vulnerable, often agreeing to repairs out of fear of system failure or safety concerns.
One of the most common tactics used by disreputable companies is the bait-and-switch. Here’s how it works:
Though bait-and-switch tactics have been outlawed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), they remain a favored tool of unscrupulous companies. For homeowners, the key to staying safe is being cautious of any deal that seems too good to be true and knowing your rights when it comes to HVAC services.
The bait-and-switch isn’t the only method these companies use to scam homeowners. There are several other tricks that unethical technicians employ to make a quick buck. Let’s break them down.
In this scam, a technician claims that your heat exchanger has cracked, allowing dangerous carbon monoxide to leak into your home. This creates a sense of urgency and fear, pressuring you into replacing the heat exchanger—or even your entire furnace—on the spot.
While heat exchangers can crack and pose a safety risk, it is rare and usually only occurs in systems nearing the end of their life (about 15 years). A reputable technician will offer to show you the crack, explain the risks, and work with the manufacturer to see if it’s covered by warranty.
Warning Sign: If a technician tells you that your heat exchanger is cracked but refuses to show you the damage, get a second opinion immediately.
Some technicians carry a dirty HVAC filter with them to show homeowners, claiming it came from their system. They’ll use this as “proof” that you need a costly new filter or even an air purification system.
Warning Sign: Be present when your technician inspects or replaces your filter. A reputable professional will have no issue showing you the actual condition of your HVAC components.
Some contractors omit a detailed price breakdown when suggesting repairs or system replacements, making it difficult for homeowners to understand what they’re paying for. In some cases, they’ll suggest an expensive replacement without explaining the individual costs of labor and parts.
Warning Sign: Always ask for a written, detailed estimate before agreeing to any repairs or replacements. A trustworthy company will provide a breakdown and compare the costs of repairing vs. upgrading your system.
Low refrigerant levels in your system usually indicate a leak, but some technicians will simply recharge your system and send you the bill without fixing the actual issue. This ensures they’ll need to return to “recharge” your refrigerant again in the future, keeping you on the hook for more money.
Warning Sign: If a technician recommends a refrigerant recharge without addressing the root cause of the issue (the leak), get a second opinion.
A reputable HVAC company will never ask for upfront cash payments before starting work. If a technician requests full payment before any repairs are made, it’s a red flag.
Warning Sign: Always request a written contract before paying for services. A reputable company will be happy to provide a clear agreement outlining the work to be done and the costs involved.
To avoid falling victim to scams, EdgeLine recommends the following steps:
At Hillside Oil Heating and Cooling, the focus is always on honesty, transparency, and long-term customer relationships. While other companies use deceptive tactics to boost profits, Hillside takes a straightforward approach: every technician is trained to thoroughly inspect every part of your system, report their findings honestly, and work directly with homeowners to ensure they understand the condition of their HVAC unit.
Jerry Oakes, a senior technician at Hillside, explains:
“We train our techs to look at every square inch of the system and bring up any potential red flags—like oil leaks, rust spots, or a capacitor that’s slightly out of tolerance. Our goal isn’t to upsell, it’s to make sure the homeowner knows what’s going on and can make informed decisions.”
From my perspective as a technician, I often think, “Would the homeowner really feel better if I just told them everything was perfect and didn’t point out potential issues?” Probably not. That’s why I make it a point to be upfront about everything I find. I want my customers to have all the information so they can make informed decisions. It’s about building trust and making sure their home is as comfortable and safe as possible in the long run.
Preventative Maintenance Done Right: Hillside believes in the power of preventative maintenance, not just as a way to increase system longevity but to avoid costly breakdowns down the road.
