The consequences of a leaky heating oil tank can be quite serious. Some extremes are environmental damage, personal health and safety, fines, and the cost of cleanup.
Homeowners insurance, as you may know, makes homeowners responsible for upkeep and maintenance. Homeowners insurance does not pay for things like worn out roofs, siding, etc… Your heating oil tank is no different. Just like anything in your home, nothing lasts forever. Homeowners insurance is essentially “accident” insurance. You should take a peek at your home heating oil tank several times a year to make sure it looks OK.
For the most part, this can be avoided with regular tank inspections. If something does not look right, it probably is not right. Check the tank legs and make sure they are not missing, rusted, buckled, or bent. Ensure the leg brackets are not cracked or coming from the tank.
Check the tank’s platform or blocks under the legs to ensure they aren’t cracked or deformed.
Look for rust on metal tanks. Run your hands over the tank and connectors to detect warps, dents, weeping, or wet spots. Statistics show that the bottoms usually leak first. Hillside offers a warranty for heating oil tanks and the Tank-Guard program. This program pays for replacing your heating oil tank if it leaks while enrolled, but it does not cover any expense related to cleanup, etc…
If you suspect a leak, call us as soon as possible. We will send a technician to assess the situation and contain the leak. We can also replace or install your new tank. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at 302-738-4144 or 410-398-2146.
